TEACHING GUIDE
DAY THREE

The Main Point: True Heroes Make Good Choices

  •  Verse of the day: Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish. Esther 4:16b

  • Bible Story: Esther risks her life to save her people

  • Pointing to Christ: Jesus, the true hero, makes good choices.

SUMMARY FOR LEADERS

In general, “good choices” are decisions that have maximum benefit and lowest risk to the decision maker. However, for those who belong to Jesus, the choices we make revolve around God, His people, the world, and then self. How can this be? This is because a true hero finds all of his/her worth in the truth that they belong to the living God, in what He says about him/her, and have a never-ending bond between God and self.

In the story of Esther, we see a beautiful, obedient, confident and wise woman who makes a choice that could potentially lead to her own demise (high risk). Yet, in the moment of immense stress, she makes a good choice. She risks her life for the sake of God’s people, in obedience to her uncle, using the position that God had given her. She goes against the plan of an evil, racist man and a pompous king. AGAIN, this story should not be first and foremost about us. Let’s face it, we will most likely NOT do what Esther did. But there is one who she points to: Jesus Christ. In the Book of Esther, the name of God is never mentioned, however, the reader can clearly see that God is orchestrating all things for the benefit of His people. In the life of Jesus, from the beginning until the end, God’s plan is clearly voiced by angels and by the Triune God Himself! God is intimately involved in making a wonderful choice for the benefit of His people and for His own glory. Only when this truth is revealed in our minds and hearts can we truly be true heroes who begin to make good choices. And in every decision where His name is at stake, the “Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say." Luke 12:12.

READ, EXPLORE, SING, TELL

READ

  • Esther 4:12-17

  • Luke 12:11-12

EXPLORE

  • Esther made a good choice by going to the King even though it might have been dangerous for her to do so. Because of her good choice, her people were saved from being killed.

  • One person’s good choice may even save someone’s life. Jesus is a true hero because He made a good choice by giving Himself up to die on the cross for our Sins. The choices we make in our life are powerful and we need to be wise with our decisions. One of the ways we can make good choices is by asking God and the people around us to help us. We have to make choices in our life too! God wants us to make good choices so that we can live a life that glorifies Him.

  • Have you ever planted something before? What happens to a plant if you choose to water it every single day? It grows big, tall and healthy! Now, what happens when you choose not to water a plant? It dies!

  • Can you list moments where the characters in the drama had to make a difficult choice?

  • When was a time that you had to make a difficult choice? What choice did you make? Was it the right choice or the wrong choice ?

  • Have you committed your life to Christ?

From Pastor Rick Warren:

No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Start with this prayer:

“Dear God, I know when I die I’m going to give an account of my life to you directly. I confess I have ignored you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all I’ve done wrong so that I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me, Lord. I could never be good enough to get into a perfect place.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You made me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I ask you to save me from the sins and habits that are messing up my life right now. I believe in you, Jesus. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, certainly, completely, and eternally. I want to live the rest of my life by your priorities, not my own. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

SING

TELL

You can make good choices with the help of others and God

  • Yourself: What good choice can I make today? Even if it’s scary or difficult, there are people who can help. But most importantly, God will strengthen and help me (Isaiah 41:10).

  • Family Member: Help your family member to make a good choice.

  • Friend: Ask your friend what they would do if they were stuck in a situation like Queen Esther.
